Hummingbird Hero

Humming Bird (painting)Humming Bird (photo)

Let me tell you a special story about a "Hummingbird Hero".

Hummingbirds are 'special'. At least they are to me. I purchased this photo for my mother-in-law who also loves these tiny wonders of nature. When I asked if I could paint them the photographer granted me permission and was pleased, but this is not the story I want to tell. Jim Beevers who is the photographer has made a name for himself in a very special way. Let me explain.

This photo was taken in Yuma, Arizona where many folks watched this hummingbird mother feed her young. Her nest was secretly hidden in a bougainvillea bush. The mother hummingbird would often hover like a helicopter by her two babies and dote over them as mothers often do.

One stormy day, which is rare in Yuma, the rain came pelting down. The mother hummingbird was frantic as the rain started to wrip apart her fragile nest when along came her hero to her rescue. Mr. Jim Beevers had been carefully documenting the hummingbirds progress with his photos. Everyone in the park had been watching the birds as the news spread fast. I had taken some photos as well and the sometimes frightened mother was already getting used to her new found fame, but this day was different. The pounding rain had almost washed away the nest and the two frightened babies when suddenly the man with the big camera appeared. This time he arrived with soft cotton balls in hand and a shelter from the rain. Carefully and gently he rebuilt the falling nest with several cotton balls and then placed a shield above it so that the rain could no longer do its damage. The distraught mother and babies were now safe from the elements and although the rain continued to pour they could only hear the drops as they fell. Above them their hero had placed a 'plastic cake cover'. The dome was their shelter from the torrent rain. Their hero and friend Mr. Jim Beevers had saved the day!
