Passing On

by Regina Sabiston

Passing OnEd Pylypiuk was kind, older gentleman that I had come to know at the Sears Store in Wynyard. He and his wife had worked there for many years. Each time I stopped to pick up my parcels I would chat with them about what was new. That's usually what happens in small communities.

Over the next few years Ed and his wife got to know my children as they were growing up. They had never been able to have children themselves and although they talked about adoption, it never happened. Ed would ask Rose to sing a song and while she was still a child she gladly shared a tune or two. Those were happy times we all enjoyed.

Years later Ed and his wife retired and spent several years traveling together. When I heard that Ed's wife had died it saddened me because I knew he was truly alone with no children to comfort him. One day he called me up and asked me if I would do him a favor and as you can see this collage was the result. I was asked to put together a collection of all the things that were important to him. It was my first attempt at making a collage and although it was very time consuming, I enjoyed making it as much as he enjoyed sharing his stories and photos with me. I would visit him once a week for several weeks and discuss what he held most dear to his heart and what he had done over his lifetime. He had two nieces and was determined to leave something behind so that he and his wife would not be forgotten. He would leave them an heirloom and I was the creater of his autobiography.

Ed sadly passed away few weeks ago. I thought of the time I had spent with him...reminiscing and telling me his life story. I hope his neices will enjoy the collage as much as I enjoyed making it. It's filled with happy memories that I hope they will cherish for a long time.
