Heaven's Doggy Door
by Regina Sabiston
My best friend closed his eyes last night,
As his head was in my hand.
The Doctors said he was in pain
And it was hard for him to stand.
The thoughts that scurried through my head,
As I cradled him in my arms.
Were of his younger, puppy years,
And OH...his many charms.
Today, there was no gentle nudge
With an intense "I love you gaze",
Only a heart that's filled with tears
Remembering our joy filled days.
But an Angel just appeared to me,
And he said, "You should cry no more,
God also loves our canine friends,
HE's installed a "doggy door"!
Jan Cooper
This is Fletcher, a beloved dog in "Doggy Heaven". The poem written by Jan Cooper says it all. He was a beloved member of the family and I was commissioned to paint him after he had died. I always find this an honor. I know how precious a pet can be. Many people don't understand, but that's because they don't allow themselves to fall in love with a pet for whatever reason. I can tell you from my heart that they are loosing out, for there is no more loyal a friend, than a dog. Once you let them into your heart you will never be the same again. As the saying goes, "Better to have loved and lost, than never to have loved at all". This is also true for pets. They will bring such great joy and change your life forever. I painted this portrait in memory of "Fletcher", a dog who was truly loved and will forever be in the hearts of his human family. May he "Rest in Peace".
