Have You Heard?

by Regina Sabiston

Have You Heard?Children say and do the funniest things, don't they? Just look at my son. As a child he was always imitating those around him. With a screwdriver in hand, he made his attempt at fixing the Television. As you can see, this was SERIOUS business. It was on this day that we finally figured out what he had been asking us for...a screwdriver.

For days he had been repeating the word "Coodycow" and we were perplexed. "What in the world is a coodycow?" I asked myself. Not being able to say screwdriver, my son had made up this word hoping that we could figure out what he wanted. If you've ever been with children learning how to talk you can probably relate to this.

Dustin was a special child, always watching, listening and imitating everything we did. Sometimes I would find him dusting off the coffee table. Another time I would find him trying to vacuum. As a child he was unique and fun to be with, always eager to learn and always coming up with surprising ways to make me laugh.

I especially remember him coming up to me one day a few years later. He had been watching Daffy Duck on the television and marched right up to me and said, "You're dispicable!" Of course, I laughed. He didn't even know what that meant.

Yes, kids do and say the darndest things and Dustin was no exception. I can't wait to tell you more, but for now I hope you enjoy this painting where I've tried to capture a moment in time so dear to my heart. Perhaps you, too, have special memories of your children. When I look back, it's as if it was yesterday!
