Celebrate!
by Regina Sabiston
We celebrate many days in our lives, but one of the most important days is Mother's Day. I celebrate because of what becoming a mother has meant to me. Right from the day my children were born my life changed forever, for the good. Oh sure, there were difficult days, but for the most part I have very fond memories of raising both my son and my daughter. I was fortunate, God gave me one of each.
This painting expresses just one of those special moments. Rose was just two, but this birthday was exceptional. Not only did she have one birthday party, but she had two, one with her friends and one with her grandmas and grandpas. Well after all, it was her second birthday and she was cute as could be and I'm not just saying that because I'm her mother.
I made special cakes for every birthday year after year without regrets because when you become a mother that's just what you do, not because you have to, but because you want to. I remember that not only did Rose get two parties and two cakes, she also got to blow out the candles twice.
When I look at this painting I remember the day vividly and smile. If I could have only kept her like that, so sweet, so precious, so small, but we all know that time must go on and little girls must grow up so that someday they can be mothers too. I sit here with tears streaming down my face and wonder where has all the time gone?
Today I celebrate with my family. I wouldn't have it any other way so I say Happy Mother's Day to all the mothers and grandmothers out there and also to the father's who have to be mothers for their children due to the loss of a loved one. Celebrate this day with pride. You deserve it!
